Nero is incredibly protective of his family in DMC 4 because they're all he's got. Even when Vergil staggers in to the garage at the start of 5 and steals Nero's arm, Nero offers to give him some food before realising Vergil is a demon. When we get to the end of 5, Nero doesn't want Vergil dead either.

Dante's actions like that are all in books which sucks. Nero is also in some ways more selfish than Dante. Apparently the only reason Nero even fought Dante in DMC4 was because Kyrie was in danger. If she wasn't around, he wouldn't give a shit and just walked away.

For me, Nero has too few moves, and the ones that boost his rating, the 3 bars exceed ones are really hit or miss. On the other side Dante has too many mechanics and weapons to use and feels really complicated, imo Vergil is the perfect character in terms of mechanics, perfect amount of weapons, tons of moves and combos, big skill gap with the judgement cuts, etc.
Devil May Cry started with Dante, the son of Sparda. You never see Sparda, but his presence loomed over the first and third games. Dante's white hair and red coat were immediately iconic, and you briefly see the most brief glimpse of Nelo Angelo's true identity; another white-haired man, eerily similar to Dante, who drops a pendant matching Dante's own, but belonged to his brother, Vergil.
